Viking Mines (ASX:VKA) unearths gold potential at Northern Duplex
February 18, 2025Viking Mines (ASX:VKA) has confirmed a promising gold discovery at its Northern Duplex Greenfields Target, delivering intercepts that hint at significant mineralisation along a previously untested stretch of the prolific Zuleika Shear.
While the market often fixates on proven deposits, this emerging junior is staking its claim on a 23km strike length within a structure that has historically produced over a million ounces of gold.
Drilling Results: A Window into Potential
The latest drilling campaign has returned a standout intercept from hole VKRC0068:
- 17m at 1.1g/t Au from 28m, including:
- 1m at 1.6g/t Au from 28m
- 2m at 3.1g/t Au from 34m
- 3m at 1.3g/t Au from 38m
With assays still pending for three additional drill traverses spanning up to 2.8km from this result, Viking Mines Managing Director and CEO Julian Woodcock is confident they’ve uncovered something worth chasing.
“I can’t emphasise enough the scale of the area we are drill testing and the opportunity for discovery of a substantial gold deposit,” Woodcock said. “The tenor of these results is analogous to those that are commonly seen proximal to substantial gold deposits.”
A Junior with a First-Mover Advantage
The significance of Viking’s results lies in the strategic positioning of its tenure.
The company’s 100%-owned ground sits within the same stratigraphic horizon as Ora Banda Mining’s (ASX:OBM) 1.2Moz Davyhurst Camp, just 40km south.
Viking’s landholding stretches 23km along the Zuleika Shear, yet only 3.6km has been tested with drilling so far.
Unlike many juniors looking to build upon historic resources, Viking is breaking new ground.
Prior to this program, no bedrock drilling had been conducted for over 20km to the south and 3km to the north.
This fresh prospectivity could prove pivotal in an era where many gold explorers are left refining already known systems.
Next Steps: Infill, Assays, and More Drilling
The company isn’t sitting still.
With a Phase 2 drilling campaign set to kick off in early March, Viking plans to target a separate 6km-long geochemical anomaly at the Central Duplex Target.
Once outstanding assays from Northern Duplex return, follow-up drilling will be incorporated.
Additionally, Viking is launching a close-spaced shallow auger program (20m x 100m grid) to better define the extent of mineralisation before further bedrock drilling.
“We are focused on delineating the extents of the target with further fieldwork and follow-up drill testing to establish if we have a new gold deposit by the tail,” Woodcock said.
Market Implications
While Viking Mines remains a speculative play, its positioning on a proven structure, early drill success, and an aggressive exploration strategy make it one to watch.
For gold bulls looking for exposure beyond the usual ASX mid-tiers, Viking’s unfolding story could provide just the kind of asymmetric upside that junior explorers are known for—if the drill bit continues to deliver.
With assays pending and more drilling imminent, Viking’s Northern Duplex discovery has all the hallmarks of a high-stakes gold exploration play.
Whether this turns into a true company-making discovery remains to be seen, but the groundwork is being laid for a compelling narrative in WA’s rich goldfields.
