The Lizard King goes hard on nickel and greenwashing

July 18, 2023 0 By The Lizard King

It is amusing to see boasts of saving the environment through Indonesian nickel as they dig up the rainforest and pour millions of tonnes of waste into the Pacific – I know the Greens will never belove mining. Still, you can at least be a little honest.

I’m not piling on a country that wants to develop a transformative industry. If it goes like the Saudis and their oil, Indonesia may have a golf tournament someday and get to fire Greg Norman themselves.

But I’m not too fond of hypocrisy. I like how it is cooler to cheat on someone rather than claim polyamory or do cocaine instead of having a Ritalin prescription – lazily claiming ESG when it wouldn’t pass the sniff test of anosmia is just somewhat lame.

Not that mining is renowned for being cool, but it is for being rich, and if you’re rich enough, does it even matter anymore?

At least you could tell the Germans thought they were doing a good thing getting rid of the nuclear plants and turning to environmentally beloved coal to keep the bratwurst turning.

The long-term growth story for nickel and the EV market is still there, and the majors continue to invest, but will the automakers put their money where their mouths are and buy from Australian suppliers that don’t tear up the rainforest? Unless I buy into Indonesian nickel, of course, then they can do whatever the hell they want.
