Buxton Resources (ASX:BUX) clears heritage milestone at Madman, eyes Havieron style drilling target
July 3, 2025Buxton Resources (ASX:BUX) has taken a significant step forward at its 100 percent owned Madman Project in Western Australia by completing a comprehensive Aboriginal Heritage Survey.
This milestone provides the cultural and operational foundation for upcoming exploration activities, including the company’s first drilling program over a compelling geophysical target.
In this investor Q and A, Chief Executive Officer Marty Moloney addresses key questions around the heritage survey, the scale of opportunity at Madman, and the next steps Buxton is taking to progress one of the most underexplored gold and copper regions in Australia.
Why is completing the heritage survey such a critical milestone for the Madman Project?
It is a major step forward for us, the Aboriginal Heritage Survey is more than a tick box.
It is about building respectful partnerships with Traditional Owners and setting the tone for how we operate.
This particular survey involved both ethnographic and archaeological assessments, and it was conducted with the support and guidance of six Traditional Owners from the Birriliburu Native Title group.
They are the custodians of the land, and working alongside them was both productive and meaningful.
We also used a helicopter to inspect the proposed drill sites, camp locations and 62 kilometres of access routes.
That allowed us to complete a very efficient and detailed survey. With that work now complete, we are in a stronger position to secure the final approvals we need.
Just as importantly, we gained valuable on the ground knowledge about the terrain, access conditions and cultural considerations, which means we can now move forward with much greater clarity and confidence.
“The successful completion of this Heritage Survey is a cornerstone for securing our social license to operate at Madman.”
What makes the Madman Project so prospective, and why is Buxton excited about this target?
Madman presents a very rare kind of opportunity, we are looking at a discrete magnetic anomaly with a strength of around 200 nanoTeslas, covering about one square kilometre.
That is a meaningful signature as it lies under shallow cover and sits on the western edge of the Paterson Orogen, right next to the Marloo Fault.
These are key indicators that we could be sitting on something significant and what is extraordinary is that there has been no previous on ground exploration over this target.
That is almost unheard of in Western Australia and we are the first to systematically assess this anomaly, and that gives us a first mover advantage.
We also know that nearby GSWA work at Trainor 1 intersected veinlets with anomalous gold and tellurium, along with other important pathfinder elements like copper, molybdenum, bismuth and antimony.
Those results, combined with evidence of hydrothermal alteration, strongly suggest a mineralised system.
It lines up with other major discoveries in the Paterson, and while early stage, the data gives us reason to be excited.
As Moloney explained:
“What we have is a compelling magnetic target in a proven mineral belt, under shallow cover, and with no historical drilling. That is a rare opportunity.”
What are the next steps before drilling begins at Madman?
Right now, we are waiting for the final heritage report which we expect within four to six weeks and once we receive that, we can move forward with remaining approvals and finalise our field planning.
We are already using the knowledge from the survey to fine tune our operational strategy, that includes detailed discussions with drilling contractors and access logistics.
The seismic line leading into the project area is in good condition, but we will be upgrading the final six kilometres and establishing an additional 56 kilometres of new access tracks.
We are making sure that when approvals are in place, we can mobilise without delay.
Our goal is to drill as soon as practicable, and that first program will be focused on testing the magnetic anomaly directly and collecting the first ever subsurface data from this part of the belt.
How does the Madman target compare to other major deposits in the Paterson Orogen?
Madman shares many of the right geological traits with major deposits in the Paterson.
It is early stage but the ingredients are all there, the anomaly itself is similar in scale and intensity to what you see at Havieron.
It lies on a major crustal boundary, close to confirmed pathfinder mineralisation, and shows signs of a large hydrothermal event.
The broader Paterson Orogen has delivered more than 34 million ounces of gold and over three million tonnes of copper.
What stands out is that more than half of that gold, and almost all the copper, have been defined in just the last decade.
That tells you the region is still underexplored and capable of delivering world class discoveries.Moloney noted:
“Over 50 percent of the gold and nearly all the copper discovered in the Paterson Orogen has been defined in just the past decade. Madman fits right into that narrative.”
We believe Madman fits into that picture, it is not just about chasing another Havieron.
It is about testing a high quality, untouched target using modern exploration tools in an area that has barely been scratched.
How is Buxton managing stakeholder engagement in such a remote and culturally sensitive area?
We have made a point of starting early and taking a respectful approach, working closely with the Birriliburu Traditional Owners on the heritage survey to establish an open line of communication from the outset.
Their input has been instrumental in shaping where and how we plan to operate, which is essential for long term success in remote and culturally significant regions.
At the same time, we are engaging with local pastoralists and other stakeholders who have deep knowledge of the area.
Their insights are helping us understand the practical realities of access, land use, and environmental responsibility.
For us, it is not just about the rocks; it is about building trust, and that means being transparent, listening, and doing what we say we will do.
The way we approach this first phase will set the standard for everything that follows, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Laying the groundwork for a transformational drill program
With the heritage survey now complete, Buxton Resources is preparing to unlock a highly prospective, untouched magnetic anomaly in one of Australia’s most active discovery corridors.
The company is combining first mover exploration, technical discipline and genuine stakeholder engagement to create the conditions for meaningful discovery.
As Moloney summarised:
“This survey significantly deepened our understanding of the operating environment. We can now refine our plans for executing the upcoming maiden drilling program with vastly improved confidence.”
