Altech Batteries Limited (ASX:ATC) has taken a significant step towards establishing itself as a major player in renewable energy storage by signing its first Offtake Letter of Intent (LOI) with Zweckverband Industriepark Schwarze Pumpe (ZISP).

This agreement marks the beginning of Altech Batteries CERENERGY® GridPack energy storage solution being integrated into Germany’s energy transition, as coal-reliant regions like Lusatia pivot towards greener alternatives.

A Milestone for CERENERGY® Technology

Under the terms of the LOI, ZISP will purchase 30MWh of Altech’s 1MWh CERENERGY® GridPacks annually for the next five years, commencing from 2027.

These solid-state sodium chloride batteries are developed to provide a scalable, efficient energy storage solution, critical in overcoming the intermittency challenges of renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

This partnership also involves collaboration to convert the Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park, currently reliant on coal, into a renewable energy hub.

Altech’s Managing Director, Iggy Tan, underscored the importance of this agreement: “This Letter of Intent marks a significant milestone for Altech Batteries as it represents our first offtake agreement for the CERENERGY® GridPack Battery Energy Storage System. The interest shown by the Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park Association (ZISP) in our technology is a clear signal of growing demand for innovative energy storage solutions, particularly as industries shift toward 100% renewable energy”.

Germany’s Energy Transition in Focus

As Germany phases out coal under its Energiewende initiative, the Lusatia region is at a critical juncture.

The ZISP partnership with Altech Batteries provides a blueprint for other industrial parks across Europe to transition to sustainable energy models.

ZISP’s role, overseeing energy infrastructure within the industrial park, places it in a unique position to champion this change, supported by Altech’s cutting-edge battery technology.

The integration of CERENERGY® batteries ensures that renewable energy can be reliably stored and deployed, even during periods of low generation.

This project is in line with ZISP’s ambition to be certified under the EU’s “Zero Valley” initiative, further solidifying the industrial park’s position as a model for renewable energy implementation.

Altech’s long-term involvement in this transition, backed by their scalable battery technology, could influence the broader European renewable energy landscape.

A Bright Future for Energy Storage

With battery deliveries slated to begin by mid-2027, Altech’s CERENERGY® GridPacks have the potential to be a game-changer for industrial energy storage.

The 120 MWh production facility, planned for Saxony, Germany, will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for efficient, lithium-free energy storage solutions.

As Tan pointed out, “This LOI not only validates the commercial potential of our CERENERGY® technology but also supports our future growth strategy, as securing such agreements strengthens Altech’s position for project financing and expansion”.

Altech’s foray into the European energy market signals a new era for renewable energy storage, offering a glimpse into how strategic partnerships and technological innovation can help decarbonise industrial regions across the globe.
