Cygnus (ASX:CY5) return best Bencubbin results to date

September 22, 2023 0 By Tom Duggan

Cygnus Metals‘ latest assays have returned the highest grade and thickest rare earth intercepts to date and shown the potential for its Bencubbin Lithium Project to hold a significant West Australian discovery.

Grades up to 7243ppm TREO and intercepts 79 metres wide back up early promising results at Bencubbin, and project-wide auger results have highlighted a wide, 22 kilometre spread of close to surface anomalism over 500ppm TREO.

The drill results doubled the known strike length to 4.5 kilometres, but the auger campaign has offered the potential for up to 22 kilometres of strike, and expanded, project-scale air core drilling will soon begin to confirm the widespread anomalism.

Cygnus Managing Director David Southam said it was the latest in a string of highly promising rare earth results.

“It is still early days in the discovery, but we can see the project has significant potential and that’s why we are about to start metallurgical tests. While our clear focus remains on lithium in James Bay, Quebec, we are going to pursue Bencubbin with the aim of establishing its true full value,” Mr Southam said.

“Our small dedicated Australian team will now focus on some follow-up air core drilling while samples are being sent for very important metallurgical test work”.

At Cygnus’ Canadian lithium assays the company has swiftly delivered a significant and open maiden JORC resource to the Pontax project as one of the few established James Bay resources and appears on the same path at Auclair with a well proven exploration model.

Canada is the clear focus, but Bencubbin has now been established as an intriguing rare earth asset on the doorstep of the rare earth assets of international miners.

While rare earth exploration has largely been left to the juniors, both Rio Tinto and IGO are active in the same area, and IGO set up its Lake Campion project specifically to target clay-hosted rare earths.

Follow-up drilling is pending final government approval and metallurgy is planned to be done through high-profile ANSTO Minerals, and an initial project has been developed through the organisation to test the leachability of rare earths and other critical metal byproducts.
