Neometals subsidiary Primobius GmbH has received an A$30.8 million order from Mercedes-Benz for installation in its proprietary battery recycling technology at the car giant’s Kuppenheim pilot operation in Germany.

Mercedes opened a new battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim, Germany in March of last year where the company aims to establish closed-loop recycling of battery raw materials.

Primobius will install the company’s patented lithium battery recycling process through a plant supply and technology licensing business model.

The purchase order covers the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the Hub, which is designed to refine intermediate products from the 2,500tpa shredding ‘Spoke’ currently being fabricated for Mercedes under a previous purchase order.

Primobius will install a Mercedes LiB Recycling Pilot Plant with a capacity of 2,500tpa to recover materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt for reuse in the production of 50,000 battery modules for new Mercedes vehicles.

Beyond the Mercedes Pilot Plant, Primobius is focused on engineering an industrial-scale solution for Mercedes.

“We are proud to partner with Mercedes in its journey to lead the closed-loop recycling of lithium batteries,” Neometals Managing Director Chris Reed said.

“The relationship exemplifies some of the unique aspects of Primobius’ business model. One of these is the ability to supply plant and offer technology licenses so OEMs can retain their battery materials from scrap and end-of-life batteries.”

The successful commissioning and achievement of steady-state operations will significantly de-risk the next level of scale up to 21,000tpa.
