Heads will roll: Paddy Hannan statue decapitated in Kalgoorlie
October 12, 2023The iconic statue of prospector Paddy Hannan has been decapitated overnight in Kalgoorlie.
The damage was first noticed at 5am this morning, and the regional icon’s head appears to still be missing.
It is most likely the statue will have to be completely replaced; Police and council are investigating, but there appear to be no leads so far.
Heads are sure to roll when the culprit is found, and Kalgoorlie local and mayoral candidate told 6PR Breakfast that he and the rest of the council were utterly disgusted by the Simpsons-inspired act.
“It’s a very honoured statue, but sadly if any new visitors come to town, they won’t be able to see what Paddy actually looks like,” he said.
An Irish labourer turned gold prospector, Hannan’s 1893 discovery of the richest square mile in the world set off a Kalgoorlie gold rush which continues to this day and remains absurdly productive from the surrounding regions and the astonishing sight that is the Super Pit.
While the bronze that represents Hannan is less valuable than the gold he discovered, residents will certainly feel the temporary loss of a town icon.
