Great Northern Minerals’ scientific team has achieved up to 98 per cent recovery rates from lithium in magnetic mineral concentrates during magnetic separation testwork for its Kuusisuo project in Finland.

The 96-98 recovery rates from the Western Australian company’s preliminary testwork efforts reduced the lithium to between 45.7% and 50.5% of its original mass.

Great Northern Minerals Managing Director Cameron McLean said the recovery rate results were pleasing as the company worked towards a milestone to pick up an exploration licence for Kuusisuo in the December half-year of 2024.

“GNM is pleased with the results of the magnetic separation tests at Kuusisuo and the possible commercial outcomes that it represents,” McLean said.

“The company is excited to continue exploration efforts at Kuusisuo and we look forward to lodging our exploration licence application which we expect to be granted in 2H 2024.”

GNM tipped the encouraging results produced by experienced Scandinavian consultant Axray Scientific AB using University of Gothenburg equipment supported a case for cost-effective processing solutions at Kuusisuo.

The company has flagged Kuusisuo’s similarity to the giant Cinovec deposit in the Czech Republic, saying comparable processing pathways had been reported at Cinovec.

Cinovec has the potential to be the lowest cost hard rock project in the world, producing 29,386 tonnes a year of lithium hydroxide over a planned 25-year mine life.

The Czech mine project is nearing final investment decision stage.
