Fresh gold targets emerge as Lunnon Metals (ASX:LM8) rewrites Kambalda’s story
December 17, 2024 Off By MarketOpenFor decades, Kambalda’s riches have been synonymous with nickel.
But as Lunnon Metals (ASX:LM8) pushes deeper into its exploration strategy, the company is uncovering a golden opportunity that once sat unnoticed beneath the shadows of its famed nickel-hosting rocks.
Proof of Concept: Gold Confirmed in the Lunnon Sediment
A recent scout drilling program east of Lunnon’s Foster Mine, part of its Kambalda Gold & Nickel Project (KGNP), delivered tangible proof of concept – confirming both gold mineralisation and the presence of the Lunnon Sediment, a critical host for gold in the region.
Key intercepts such as 27m @ 0.54g/t gold, including 1m @ 15.68g/t gold, have proven Lunnon’s geological model.
Managing Director Edmund Ainscough, visibly buoyed by the results, states:
“Gold is hosted in almost every stratigraphic unit, but the Lunnon Basalt was always considered the ‘poor cousin,’ so to speak. These are small, but important first steps in Lunnon Metals’ plan to test this new exploration search space on its own ground.”
Missed Opportunities Beneath Nickel’s Shadow
Historically, Kambalda’s exploration focused on the ultramafic-basalt contact for nickel.
Yet just 80-120m beyond lay the Lunnon Sediment – largely ignored until Karora Resources uncovered the Father’s Day Vein at Beta/Hunt in 2018, a find that yielded 9,000 ounces of coarse gold.
Lunnon’s drilling campaign is now breathing new life into this overlooked stratigraphy.
The company’s reinterpretation of Kambalda’s geology highlights the potential to unlock value from what others left behind.
Strategic Advantage: Proximity to Infrastructure
One of Lunnon Metals standout advantages is its proximity to existing infrastructure.
With Gold Fields’ Lefroy Plant just kilometres away and prospects sitting on 100%-owned mining tenements with well-established access, any future discoveries could quickly transition to production opportunities.
This advantage positions Lunnon Metals well in a market increasingly focused on near-term, low-capex development opportunities.
Next Steps: Eyes on Defiance West in 2025
The most promising chapter is still to come.
Drilling at the Defiance West target, set to begin in early 2025, will mark the first deep bedrock test of this newly identified exploration space.
Supported by a government-funded grant, the program has the potential to further validate Lunnon’s strategy.
As Ainscough explains:
“We couldn’t be more excited for our 2025 program to commence.”
Rewriting Kambalda’s Geological Playbook
Lunnon Metals is charting a course that challenges decades of exploration convention in Kambalda.
By shining a light on the Lunnon Basalt and its sedimentary units, the company is redefining what is possible in one of Australia’s most storied mining districts.
This is more than just a gold hunt – it’s a fresh perspective on Kambalda’s geology that could yield dividends for years to come.
