Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) CERENERGY®: Leading the charge in sodium-chloride battery innovation
October 1, 2024Altech Batteries (ASX:ATC) has taken a significant leap forward in the energy storage sector, unveiling its first CERENERGY® 60 kWh battery prototype.
Tested at the Fraunhofer Institute’s laboratory in Dresden, the battery has not only passed with flying colours but has also outperformed early expectations.
The battery’s performance in real-world conditions is proving to be a game-changer for the industry, showcasing efficiency and durability that sets it apart from the competition.
Highlights:
- 60 kWh CERENERGY® prototype completed and undergoing rigorous testing
- Exceeding expectations with exceptional efficiency and stability
- Commercial potential for large-scale production
- 15-year lifespan, doubling that of lithium-ion batteries
The CERENERGY® battery is unique in its use of sodium-chloride solid-state technology, eschewing the critical metals often associated with traditional lithium-ion batteries, such as lithium, copper, cobalt, and graphite.
As Altech Batteries CEO and Managing Director Iggy Tan pointed out, “The CERENERGY® battery can operate in a wide range of temperatures and has a life of 15 years, around double that of lithium-ion batteries.” This characteristic, along with the battery’s ability to maintain stable operating temperatures, is already catching the attention of potential off-take partners.
The Future of Battery Storage
Designed to meet the growing demand for reliable, safe, and efficient energy storage, CERENERGY® batteries address the critical concerns of today’s energy sector: sustainability and longevity.
The battery operates without the risk of fire or explosion, and its reliance on table salt positions it as an environmentally conscious alternative.
Altech’s progress in this space has been bolstered by its partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute, a leading research organisation in Germany.
In addition to the 60 kWh prototype, Altech has been conducting extensive tests on individual battery cells, which have demonstrated remarkable stability over 500 cycles, maintaining an impressive efficiency of up to 91%—a key factor in ensuring the battery’s long-term reliability and suitability for high-temperature applications
Commercial Potential and Scaling Up
With the prototype now online, Altech is preparing for the next phase: large-scale production. The first Letter of Intent for 30 MWh of offtake has already been secured with Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park.
Mr. Tan remains optimistic about the future, stating that the ongoing tests will provide “critical data for off-take parties,” furthering the commercialisation efforts
