North American Lithium set to refire
March 31, 2023Sayona Mining (ASX:SYA) and Piedmont Lithium (ASX:PLL) have marked July on the calendar for the first commercial shipment of lithium spodumene concentrate from the formally mothballed North American Lithium in Quebec, Canada.
It is a milestone for the joint venture partners and Canada, a country laying claim to roughly 2.5 per cent of the world’s known hard rock lithium deposits but with no serious production to date.
And it will be only major source of spodumene expected to come from North America in at least two years, which when combined with Sayona’s northern hub, comprises the continent’s most extensive resource base of lithium spodumene.
Sayona Managing Director Brett Lynch said that since the restart began, its team had maintained focus on improving lithium capture and achieving more consistent run times while streamlining operating costs.
“Improvements were made as planned in our timeline and budget, and we are eager to see the impact the improvements bring to both product quality and operational efficiency as we prepare for our first commercial shipments of spodumene concentrate,” Mr Lynch said.
Piedmont President and Chief Executive Keith Phillips marked the production as an important achievement for the North American market hungry for domestic lithium resources.
“NAL is positioned to become a key contributor to the electric vehicle and battery supply chains as demand for lithium continues to rapidly expand along with electrification economies in both Canada and the U.S,” Mr Phillips said.
NAL is just one of a trio of Quebecois lithium projects forming a solid joint venture between the companies.
The partners are moving quickly to cornerstone the Canadian market expediting the Feasibility Study for North American Lithium and the nearby Authier Project.
Meanwhile, a large-scale drilling campaign is hoped to rapidly lock down stock to feed much more tonnage of higher-grade material into the concentrator.
Sayona and Piedmont expect 120,000 metric tons of spodumene to ship out by year’s end.
