Nelson Resources (ASX:NES) strengthens North American push with senior exploration appointment
January 9, 2026Nelson Resources has moved to deepen its technical capability in North America with the appointment of a senior exploration executive, a step that aligns with the company’s recent consolidation around Nevada and its Gold Point Project in the Walker Lane district.
The appointment comes as Nelson advances a portfolio that combines historical production credentials with underexplored targets and fresh capital earmarked for exploration activity.
Highlights
- Appointment of Matthew Dumala as Exploration Manager and Vice President of Exploration for North American Operations
- More than 20 years’ experience across mineral exploration, project development and resource delineation
- Former Partner at Archer, Cathro and Associates, a Canadian exploration consultancy
- Technical expertise spanning porphyry copper gold, epithermal precious and base metals, and carbonate replacement systems
- Oversight of Nelson’s North American exploration strategy, execution and operational capability
The appointment of Mr Matthew Dumala is effective immediately and positions him at the centre of Nelson’s North American exploration strategy, where he will be responsible for target generation, drill program planning and implementation, technical reporting, and the development of operational capability across the region.
His background as a geologist and certified geological engineer, combined with experience that spans the full exploration lifecycle, brings a level of depth that is directly relevant to Nelson’s current asset base.
Prior to joining Nelson, Mr Dumala was a Partner at Archer, Cathro and Associates, where he managed multidisciplinary teams and exploration programs across Nevada, Arizona, Yukon, British Columbia and Mexico.
His work encompassed both early stage greenfields discovery programs and advanced exploration projects, providing exposure to a range of geological settings and operational environments that mirror those now being prioritised by Nelson.
That experience is particularly applicable to the Gold Point Project in Nevada, where Nelson has executed an agreement to earn up to a 90% interest in a 31 km² claim package near the historic mining town of Gold Point, located within an area that hosts an endowment of over 40Moz Au inside a 90 km radius.
Reported pre WWII production at Gold Point is approximately 75koz Au at an average grade of 20 to 30g/t, largely derived from only 4 of 15 currently mapped high grade gold silver veins.
In addition, the project hosts previously unrecognised Au Cu W skarn and Cu Mo Au porphyry targets, opening multiple new discovery fronts.
Nelson has recently completed a placement raising $3.25M to drive exploration activity at Gold Point, providing funding support as the company moves from portfolio assembly toward execution.
The alignment of fresh capital, a defined flagship asset and strengthened technical leadership suggests a more structured phase of exploration is now underway.
Commenting on the appointment, Chairman Gernot Abl noted that
“We are delighted to welcome Matthew to the Nelson team. His depth of technical expertise and hands-on experience across key precious- and base- metal deposit types makes him ideally suited to lead our North American team and exploration activities. Matthew’s extensive prior work in Nevada provides immediate value as we accelerate exploration efforts at our recently acquired high-grade Gold Point project in the Walker Lane district. With his proven capability in both strategic planning and the practical implementation of exploration programs, we look forward to his contribution as we advance our portfolio of precious and critical minerals projects North America.”
From a broader industry perspective, Nelson’s focus on Nevada reflects the continued attraction of Tier 1 jurisdictions that combine established mining history, infrastructure and regulatory clarity.
The Walker Lane district, in particular, remains an area of sustained exploration interest due to its scale, structural complexity and history of high grade production.
As Nelson advances its North American portfolio, the emphasis now shifts to disciplined execution under experienced technical leadership.
With funding in place, a defined exploration mandate and a senior appointment tasked with strategy and delivery, the company is positioned to progress its exploration objectives within one of the most active gold provinces in the United States, while maintaining a clear operational focus grounded in geological fundamentals.
